Humble Beginnings

Emmy Scanga was born and raised in the mountains of Colorado. Crocheting since they were 8, they’ve always had an eye for plush creature versions of their favorite animals and the wildlife they saw around them. Their grandmother lovingly gave the inspiration for their business name back in 2012, Inky Fox the Yarn Bandit, a beloved nickname given to Emmy, her “Yarn Bandita”.

Emmy was married young to their former partner who served in the navy for 12 years before their divorce. Though they suddenly found themselves alone and working to rediscover life single- just prior to turning 30- crochet remained a constant. They remained on the east coast of the US, learning to accept the pieces of themself that they had long forgotten and created a new family. In this journey they fell in love with their spiritual side, studying various deities, natural remedies, meditation and their pagan beliefs. They soon realized that everything they needed was always within themself. The urge to create joy, magic and intention blossomed into every aspect of their life, including their business.

A Much Needed Change

It was in the process of submission, acceptance, design and awaiting of publication that Emmy realized that they had grown past Inky Fox the Yarn Bandit and thus Ember Mischief was born.

The project- though creating two incredible patterns that they were immensely proud to share- underscored just how much they wanted their projects to encompass all their beliefs of equality, love and acceptance. A business name- though given by their grandmother who had since passed away- didn’t reflect who Emmy had grown to be past the wake of their divorce. It didn’t reflect the ongoing love and transformation happening behind the scenes of the business.

Ember Mischief was grown, independent, stable and a beautiful reflection of shedding a childhood and young adult life that no longer served them. It embodies the magic, mystery, and manifestation of a new way of life and thinking. Though tough to change, and an even longer process to update the minutiae of the various patterns, they firmly believes in the brand as it is growing and transforming.
